Come and pick your own fresh walnuts from our orchard and enjoy a lovely autumn day on the farm in the picturesque Coal Valley.

You will need to book a ticket, which helps us manage traffic flow and parking over the weekend, now that the event has grown so popular. Tickets cost $6.80 (plus booking fee) per group, where 1 car = 1 group, and you will need to choose whether you would like to come in the morning or the afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, or anytime during the day on the Friday.

 

Bring a basket or bucket for collecting nuts and a picnic if you like – there’s plenty of room for kids to run around. We’ll have pickled walnut tastings, and over the weekend there’ll be great coffee and food showcasing the Coal Valley’s famed produce.

Collect your walnuts as fresh as they come, and only pay $7.00 per kilo for the freshest, sweetest walnuts you’ll ever taste.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Coaldale Walnuts farm and how do I get there?

Our address is 321 Prossers Rd, Richmond, Tasmania.
We are just north of Richmond and from Hobart the drive is about 30 minutes.
You will need to come by car as public transport doesn’t come past the farm. If you’re coming with others, we recommend travelling together if possible as available parking can be limited at busy times.

How do you collect walnuts?

Many of the walnuts will be on the ground, so you just need to pick them up. Children love hunting for nuts in the leaves! Some nuts will still be on the tree, so you can pick them off, or give the tree a good shake so they fall.

Will I need to remove the green husks from the walnuts?

At this stage in the season the green husks have usually fallen off the nuts. If there are any still hanging on, they are pretty easy to pull off by hand.

Will I need gloves? I’ve heard walnuts will stain your hands.

As most of the walnuts are out of their green husk, this is not usually a problem but please feel free to bring some gloves to use – gardening gloves or rubber gloves will work well.

What do I need to do with the walnuts when I get them home?

When you get your walnuts home they’ll need a bit more drying before they’re ready to eat. Just spread the walnuts out in a warm, dry area for about a week. 
Test them by opening one up and bending the thin brown membrane that separates the walnut halves. If it’s quite flexible, the walnuts need more drying. If it bends a little then breaks, they should be ready. You can also do the crunch test – eat one of the walnuts and see if it’s to your liking!

How do I store my walnuts once they’re dried?

Walnuts keep best in the shells, stored in a cool, dry place – they will stay fresh for more than 12 months. Once cracked out of the shells, the kernel should be stored in an airtight container, where it will keep for up to 12 months – although the flavour will always be best when the walnuts are fresh. Walnut kernel can also be stored in the fridge or freezer for longer.

How can I eat walnuts?

By the handful! Walnuts are a recognised super food so they are amazing for your health. Learn more about the scientifically-established health benefits. They’re also super versatile, so as well as snacking on them raw, you can also roast them, cook them in cakes, biscuits and desserts, make granola, add them to risotto, pasta and salads… the possibilities are endless. We highly recommend trying these walnut sausage rolls.

What should I bring with me?

Your ticket, either on your phone, or printed. Bring something to collect your walnuts in, such as a bucket, basket or bag (we will have some bags available if you need).
The event is outdoors, so wear sensible shoes or boots and come prepared for the weather (which can change through out the day!) – hats, sunscreen, coats are all a good idea just in case.
If you’d like to have a picnic in the orchard bring a picnic blanket – you can bring your own food and drinks or purchase from our food vans on the weekend. If you remember to bring a keep cup for hot drinks you’ll be helping us to keep our event as low-waste as we can.

How can I get my ticket?

Head to our event page at Ticketebo to book your spot. You will need to choose a day a timeslot (morning or afternoon).

What food and drinks will be available at the event?

The food vans will only be at the event on the Saturday and Sunday.

We will have great coffee and hot chocolate, cold drinks and milkshakes, cakes and lunch, including walnut sausage rolls.

On the Friday we will have a free self-serve tea and coffee station and pickled walnut tastings.

Will the event go ahead if it’s raining?

Yes! Bring your raincoat, gumboots and optimism that the rain won’t last long. We’ll have an undercover area with heating and on the weekend you’ll be able to buy a hot drink and hot food to warm up.

How much do the walnuts cost?

The walnuts you collect cost $7.00 per kg.
We will also have jars of our famous pickled walnuts available for the special event price of $12.

What payment methods do you accept?

We can take cash or card payment on the day.

Is there a lot of walking involved? Is it accessible to wheelchairs or strollers?

There is a walk of about 100m to 250m to the orchard, over grass, with a section of hill. This may be difficult for wheelchairs and strollers unless they are designed for off-road use.

Are dogs allowed?

Sorry, you can’t bring your dog to the event, except for assistance dogs.

Are there toilets?

Yes, there is a portaloo.6
